Default '04 Steering wheel radio controls broken!

The radio controls on the steering wheel of my '04 Hemi Limited has stopped working. All the other buttons (cruise control) work great, but out of no where both raido controls quit working. I've googled this online and found the same problem with newer Wranglers and discovered the common fix is to hit the steering wheel hard at the 2 o'clock position. I tried beating on the wheel with no luck. Truck does have pioneer AVIC stereo with navigation, but worked for over a year and now stopped. I'm not sure if I need to pull the steering wheel to start my troubleshooting or pull the stereo. Any fixes without pulling either??? This weekend I'm going to try disconnecting the battery as I've heard this has fixed a small number of this issue. I've also heard the clock spring in the steering wheel needing replaced. Really hoping this isn't it. Thanks. Jim

Seems like it would either be the button connections or the clock spring but I don't know enough to tell you how to diagnose it.

I'm betting on the clock spring. I doubt it would be the connections since it's both buttons, but it's not impossible either. I'm hoping someone has had this problem and had an easier fix. Clock spring are around $85 give-or-take for my truck, which seems like a lot of $$$ to fix buttons on the steering wheel for the radio when you can just reach over the radio to control it. It would just be nice that the steering wheel controls work, cause I do enjoy the feature.
