Default engaging 4x4

I was told I could engage and disengage 4 x while driving. Dont know if that is true. Now I come to stop put in park put in 4x and do the same to take out. I also have to back up tp get it out. Should I not have to. 2000 durango 4.7 4x shifter on floor.

With mine I always stop put it in park than switch it, but I can only switch it to 4high. If I put it in 4low it grinds bad, all in all the trans works great just my 4low

with 4x4 systems you have other things to know to know whether to engage 4x4 on the move.
On a standard 4x4 system you can switch from 2wd to 4x4 high at speeds up to 50 mph with out any issues (first generation Durangos are in this category).
Do not try to engage from 2wd to 4x4 whilst at speeds of over 50mph this will cause expensive damage to the transfer case and possibly the differentials.
Never try to switch in to 4x4 low whilst on the move as this can result in gear tooth loss.
If you have free wheeling hubs (the front hubs have a twisting part on the center) then these must be in "free wheeling" to allow for the on the move engaging.
Auto 4x4 systems (at the touch of a button) will not engage outside of the dynamics they were designed to (a made for idiots feature LOL).
If you buy a 4x4 with Diff lockers then again these must be in free wheeling mode before you engage the 4x4 whilst moving.
Most 4x4 systems require the vehicle to move 6-10 feet before the actual 4x4 system engages after being switched from 2wd to 4x4.
hope this helps any of you out there that doesn't know about their 4x4 system

Default 4x4

thanks for the thorough explanation. This Durango has 220000 miles and 4x4 was not used in a long time. After using it more this winter it has been shifting better and works properly now.

The statistics say that almost 90% of 4x4 owners never use their 4x4 system Which is funny considering the premium they pay to have it
