Default 2005 Durango SLT; Veteran Owner, Newbie to Problems & Forums

I’ve had my Durango since 2010(ish). I’m the second owner, and the first kept it in immaculate condition. All maintenance & service records w/125k miles. Full entertainment system, even the IR headphones were still in it and in perfect working order (I have 4 teens, grown now, so the headphones didn’t make it long). The VES is another question, for another day I reckon, because it’s not malfunctioning, just limited in upgrade options.

However, for the last 3+ years, I’ve been having intermittent overheating and A/C issues. These seem closely related, as it never overheats in the winter time (the A/C isn’t always used in the winter, but sometimes is. It’s South Georgia after all). 2yrs ago, while sitting in the high school pickup line and playing on my phone; my truck “dinged” at me. I looked up and the temp light was on, with the needle pegged all the way to and “bouncing” off the highest it can go. Luckily, I was up front and was able to pull away and get some wind in her sails with the heater cranked max. It cooled pretty quickly, but it was 93 degrees outside in like November I think. Once cooled, I put water in it and noticed a crack in the filler neck on the radiator. Had to wait on tax refund to replace, but kept a jug of water to keep it full, as the leak was barely there/visible. A/C still worked at this point, but seems to be getting louder. In February, the clutches were basically screaming, then started blowing hot air, with Freon smell unless I had the rear air blowing as well. Got the refund, ordered radiator & compressor (hubby is mechanic and installed/vacuumed/recharged). With that headache out of the way; we got on with our vacations and every weekend summer plans. At the end of the summer, I noticed my A/C beginning to get slightly louder. Same exact scenario, by February the next year, it was screaming, blowing hot air and running hot. Again, claimed warranty on compressor, replaced, evacuated/recharged. Within a month, the compressor started to make racket. Hubby ran pressure tests/found a bit of a vacuum leak and repaired, but it was still noisy. But he said to let it go for now. Well, another month, and it wasn’t any louder but it was running hot non-Stop at redlights if A/C was on. No A/C; no overheating. No leaks, water or otherwise that we could find, so he installed a heavy duty clutch fan. It allowed me to run the A/C without overheating, as long as I was mindful of how long it sat. The clutch fan and babying it got us for another 6 months, during which time I had to get ANOTHER warranty claim on the compressor, because it slowly got louder until screaming again. We had a cooler winter in 2018, and didn’t need the A/C much, but a few months ago, it ran Hot twice, no A/C on once, but found it low on water both times. He found the tiniest of water leaks around a overflow hose, but the compressor is AGAIN starting to get louder. This will be the 4th warranty replacement on a factory compressor and I have a really hard time believing that 3 compressors in a row were bad.

I may not even be able to get a warranty replacement this time and our deductions grew up/moved out so buying another $600 compressor is completely out of the realm of possibility. I also have severe heat sensitivity due to multiple sclerosis, and cannot stand the 100+ degree temps we get down here.

Does anyone have a clue what might be going on here? What keeps killing compressors? Why does she keep springing leaks?

Check the a/c condenser fan to see if it comes on.
Do you have the 4.7 or the hemi?

That you for your response. I haven’t checked the forum in a while, but there are still issues. As for the condenser; the fan was replaced twice already. Not out of failure, but desperation in trying to solve the issues. Now, it’s begun freezing up, to the point it will just start blowing hot air, until you cut it off awhile, then will “thaw” and start blowing cold again.

We charged it back up, and used an a/c leak tester but found nothing. It started blowing hot air on a trip to Florida and it was already 90+ out, so he juiced it with one of those cans with built in hose/meter. However, that’s when he saw it wasn’t low. Stopped to buy me a cooler and bag of ice so I could make it the rest of the way, then my dad/uncle hooked their machine to it and saw there were no leaks. It did fine a few days later on the way home, but we also waited until evening to leave because of my heat sensitivity. He ran a vacuum test on it twice in the month since the trip. Still no leaks, but still freezing up. I’ll be going down the road and suddenly feel extremely icy air (way colder than an a/c should be), so I’ll turn compressor off for a few minutes and let it blow normal air through (which is still quite cold for about 5-10 minutes while thawing). Once I feel the normal air warm quite a bit, then turn compressor back on, and usually only have to do this once a week or so.

Last week, he ran another vacuum on it. No leaks showing still, but Freon was low. Neither of us are understanding this. For me, that’s normal. For him, it’s crazy! He fixes used cars for a living and very successfully. He’s worked on a/c systems every single day for 20 years, but still cannot figure out why this thing keeps killing compressors and now suddenly freezing up regularly and losing Freon when no leaks can be found. We’re about to have to replace the compressor AGAIN, but I’m going to have to save for it and pray it lasts throughout this season because I won’t be able to get it for some time.
