barebones is on a distinguished road
Default Geezer in Montana

I became a Mopar aficionao at an early age - when my dad traded the Graham Paige for a '42 DeSoto. There has been a DeSoto in the family until they were discontinued. After a lapse. I bought a Dodge B250 which I still own, battle scarred after 500K or so miles. I think it has a spun bearing and luckily, I have a spare 318 wrapped in plastic in the barn!

I love the older Mopars - almost all expendables are interchangeable up to '89. The other day, my '85 W100 fried a starter out in the yard. I was able to sit down inside the engine compartment with the 225 and slip a new (used) one from a 318 in in about 30min and be on my way! Except for the Dakota chassis, this '99 Durango seems to have decent accessibility to most stuff.

The reason I joined is that I have been gifted a 1999 SLT with a 5.9L that needed some TLC+.

It has 185K miles, and the engine starts right up but lacks power and makes "snuffling" sounds and the coolant is low. I want to do a compression check, but I can't figure out how to get the air box off. There's an unfamiliar type of fastener holding it on at the inside bottom. Any HELP solving that problem would start me off on the right foot.

Also, there's a problem with the transmission: a disappearing slip(?) after warmup from 1st to 2nd. There's an internal adjustment that scheduled for adjustment every 30K miles - probably never done. Slipping clutch maybe? Time for Lucas.

I ordered a factory manual from Faxon 10 days ago. It was sent Media Mail. USPS routed it from LA to Jacksonville, FL(!) and back to Montana. I might see it after Trump is re-elected.

Except for lifetime warranty parts, I buy from RockAuto; they're cheap enough and have a really good website.

After I'm sure of the problems, I'll add up the damage to see if repair is cost effective. I put it's restored value at $1500.
