Default Towing my travel trailer with my 2012 Durango SXT

I have a 2012 Dodge Durango SXT and I plan on towing my 2004 trail lite Bantam S22 which weights about 4000lbs. I was wondering what weight distribution hitch to go with.

Default Trailer towing

Good question. I ordered a new 2013 Durango with the tow package and plan on pulling my trailer which is about the same weight as yours. I plan on using the same weight distribution hitch that I have currently which worked fine. It is the type that uses chains to tighten the bars. I was at a rv show recently and one of the dealers suggested another type he felt was better. I will be interested in the replies that you receive on this thread. Sky

The weight capacity of a load-equalizing hitch is determined by the size of the equalizer bars that you use!
Some use chains to set tension, others have "L" shaped bars.
I have always used the Reese-style, with the square bars that attach with chains.
Along with this tow arrangement, be sure to add a sway control device as well, with a trailer of that weight and you will also need a break-away safety brake device, which also requires a small battery. --- unless you have surge brakes, which are illegal on an RV!

Default Towing Capacity 2014 Durango V6 with tow package

Hi rkmDogs and others-

Just purchase 2014 Durango SXT AWD V6 with tow package and stated towing capacity is 6200#. Our Airstream RV is about 5000# with tongue wgt is 650#. We use Reese hitch with sway bars. Trouble is the vehicle manual says max. tongue wgt of 620#. Dealer is unable to provide enough technical info to satisfy our concerns. Do we have a problem? Where can we go to get more info? Nancy

Instead of reading specs, go to a scale and READ your actual tongue weight.
If it is close to max specified, re-arrange your inside storage to reduce it.
When you use your load-equalizing hitch, make sure you have the proper load-equalizing bars, and that they are set at the proper tension to level the tongue!
You should be using 10,000lb. bars, and a good sway control as well.

I just purchased my Durango and was wondering about running air bags to level the ride. I am also running into issues where it states n/a for the R/T. Anybody have any idea why or where I may go to find air bags?

Any good tire/suspension shop will have them --- but why?
What are you carrying that is distorting your ride?

BTW, in my previous reply, forgot to ask ----- you do have a 2" receiver hitch on the vehicle, don't you?
If you have the smaller 1-1/14" hitch ----- start over! It can not carry the
load with the smaller hitch receiver.
If you have an RV store nearby with a service dept., they will have a scale to measure your tongue weight. Most Camper World stores are set up to
help you. You can also find hitch equipment on line under the major brand names. You use "sway bars" ?
Maybe just a term misnomer... you need load equalizer bars and a sway controller!----- and the trailer must be set up with the proper couplers!
