Default Brake light confusion

Hello Durango Forumz,

I just bought a 2001 Durango SLT for my daughter yesterday and starting to work through issues.

First is brakes. I have no brake lights. Tail Lights appear to be fine. I've checked the fuse for the brake lights. Although it's kind of vague which fuse is for sure the correct one, the fuses I've tested are good.

I pulled the brake pedal switch and it tests good. By good, I mean I took it apart and it appears to make and break contacts as it was designed to do.

Finally, at the brake lights themselves, they never light. I do have operational tail lights. The bulbs themselves are new.

When I checked at the tail lights with a meter, I have constant voltage to the white wire on both assemblies, both left side and right side. It doesn't matter if the tail lights are lit or not, or if the brake pedal is pressed. Constant 12 volts. I don't know if the brakes get their power from the white wire that is constantly hot? So is the brake light supposed to light by completing a ground?

Sure could use some wisdom. And maybe a schematic.

Default To add to what I posted before...

I found a schematic but unclear if it's correct. It indicated I should be looking for hot on the dk grn/brn wire at the left brake light and brn/rd on the right. I'll test and post here.

Also, it mentioned there should be a junction block near the pedal switch and a multi-function switch on the steering column. I am assuming the latter is the key switch.

Finally, on the steering column, the bottom cover was off. There is a small plug there that I can't see the corresponding plug for, so it's unplugged. It is black. It is just under the key switch. The wires coming into it are pink/blk wht/grn/pur. No corresponding plug anywhere nearby.

I've dug a little deeper. Center brake lights are working fine now. All 3 bulbs were blown.

Still having a problem with lowers. If I hook a test light in the circuit, it will light when the pedal is pressed. I thought the brake lights weren't. But they are actually very dimly lit. It's just a slight red glow on the filament.

Could it be a corroded ground somewhere?

Solved. The contacts in the light housing needed to be wire brushed and bent closer to make contact.
