Default 2000 durango,,,no backup lights

backup lights quit working,,,fuse is good and so are the bulbs,,,any suggestions?????

try and get your hands on a schematic for the wiring for reverse lights from a dealership. i find if you ask the parts guy they are the ones to get it from. or spend some time and follow the wiring back and inspect it for damage or corrosion. im not sure where the reverse switch is to power the lights but a schematic will. there will be a wire harness pluged in the trans, you might check there first. sorry bud but electrical can take 5 min or days!

It could be the park/neutral switch. It controls the reverse lights as well as indicates that the vehicle is in either perk or neutral for starting. One function of this switch can go out while the other works just fine. I'm assuming since you're only asking about the lights, you aren't having trouble starting it.
If you have the 5.2 or 5.9L engine the switch is accessable from the outside of the transmission. It's on the driver's side just above the transmission pan. Unplug the harness, remove the old switch, install new switch, reconnect harness. Be sure to top of the tranny fluid if any leaks out.

If it's a 4.7L then the switch is internal on the transmission above the valve body. Much bigger job.

Oh, sometimes it will throw a code P1899
Park/Neutral switch stuck in park or in gear
Incorrect input state detected for the Park/Neutral switch (3 or 4-speed auto tranny only)

Resurrecting an old thread here but just in case someone is still around...Same problem with my 2001 Durango 4.7. Last year mechanic shook things up a bit and she started working again but soon failed. No backup lights and it's inspection time again. This time, no luck, lights aren't coming back on.

I assume given that I have the smaller engine, the issue here is that this stupid bad switch is INSIDE the transmission, meaning this is a transmission dismantle job and a major amount of labor for a small part.

My mechanic has posited just putting in an override switch that I control, which I am likely to do, but even that now has proven a challenge for him in finding where to splice in, it seems.

Any mechanics around who can tell me what I'm reasonably in for as far as labor effort and cost for a job to basically take apart a transmission just to get at and replace a dumb switch that should never been in there in the first place? Of course on the bigger engine it's outside...and I could have done this myself.
