Default Towing

Good morning all, I'm new to this so I hope I'm doing this right!! My wife and I just bought the 2014 Dodge Durango Limited with the 3.6, it didn't come with a factory tow package, I'm looking to tow a camper that has a 3500lb GVW, is this going to be an issue with an after market hitch installed? Any feed back would be greatly appreciated!

Take a look in your owners manual, it has the towing info in it. If you don't have one, you can download one from the Dodge site under owners.

With tow package the Durango is rated 6200lbs. I just had s factory tow package put on. Pulls my 2000 camper very nicely.

I just completed a 2,500 mile run from OKC and return out to Durango and Arches. RPod travel trailer weighs just over 3,000 lbs and averaged 16MPG towing until I encountered 30+ mph head winds in Kansas. Climbed Vail 10,768 foot pass with no trouble needed 3rd at 5K rpms a few times to keep over 45mph. Paddle shifters and 8 speed truly wonderful. Factory tow package from new. Great brakes and excellent temp control on long steady pulls.

What speed were you going at 16 mpg? I tow a similar weight trailer with my Acadia and can get that around 40 mph in flat highway, but drops to 13 at 55. Acadia is FWD not AWD. I'm seriously thinking about trading for a Durango. It does not like anything other than flat terrain.

Default V6 auto tow

I was doing about 62mph most of the time. I found the dash meter for mileage went up pretty dramatically the faster I went, so slowed down till I was at a comfortable speed. Especially in the mountains, why rush things, slowed most of the time to 45mph and just let the trans do its thing. The 8 speed with paddle shifters is realy nice in the mountains. gives much better control going up or down. Paddle down shift locks into lower speed to allow engine braking when needed, works well, every time no matter what the grade.

16 @62 is an awesome number. I'd get about 12 @ 60 in my Acadia on flat highway.

I suppose it depends on what year your Acadia is. Durango used to be a gas hog with heavy body frame. Now Uni-body and 8 speed ZF trans. More efficient. I get 19+ around town and use non-Ethanol as often as possible. In OK that is always. Long range tank, first fill-up on Mountain gas. I keep weight down in TT and only 1 passenger and not very much in the back. Heavy winds in KS tanked the mpg.

My Acadia is a 2014. I get 24 at 70, but in heavy stop and go city traffic, only 14-15. That's with E-10. No ethanol gas is hard to come by in FL unless it's marine grade.
