The radiator fan on my 2014 Durango V6 intermittently runs at high speed and makes a very loud roar when it does. Otherwise, the fan appears to run at a variable speed. The fan runs on high even on cool days when there does not appear to be any overheating issue. I have the HD cooling fan. Since this issue only happens intermittently, the shop is unable to diagnose it since it doesn't happen when it is there.

I am not towing anything when this happens, so it does not appear to be related to the transmission overheating.

I don't believe the issue is related to the fan relays since if either the low speed or high speed relay were bad the fan would only run at one speed. I also swapped the relays which made no difference.

I suppose it could be the coolant temp sensor, but if if shut the engine off when the fan is running on high and then immediatly restart it, the fan no long runs on high. Therefore, since the coolant would be at the same temperature after I restart the vehicle, I would think the fan would still run on high speed.

If the issue were caused by the powertrain control module, I would think I would be getting some error codes or a check engine light, but I am not.

The HD fan appears to have a lot of circuitry inside the fan itself. Perhaps this could be the issue, but I hate to pay $700 for a new fan to find out this this is not the problem.
