Burning oil/grease odor....

New 13 Citadel hemi, w/1,700 miles. I have noticed that when stopped in traffic or idling in line that I smell some type of burning oil or fluid that gets sucked into the passenger compartment through the fresh air intake/heater. I don't smell it when moving down the road - only when sitting still. I have looked all over the engine compartment and underneath and find no leaks. When I open the hood, the smell is strongest next to the radiator by the air cleaner. I have eyeballed all the trany to radiator connections and see no visual leaks.
Smells more like burning power steering or tranny fluid rather than motor oil but it's starting to become annoying - new car stink should have burned off by now....

Did you notice any plastic that is burned like the engine cover? Also you can check and see if you have any oil inside your intake manifold. One of the deals with the late model HEMIs and especially the second gen 5.7 HEMI is that oil vapor from the PCV by pass hose will gather in the intake manifold. A catch can collects that oil vapor and keeps it out of the intake manifold. I have one on my SRT8 and I had one on my RAM 1500 before I traded it in. I recommend it as a mod to anyone that owes a MOPAR with a HEMI...

As for that smell... it is a good possibility that is the reason why or it could be burnt plastic from somewhere. I noticed the same issue with my SXT yesterday and I had her for only 24 hours.

I don't know if that is the cause for that but it's worth a shot to look.

I have read up on the oil cans but don't think that I would smell that through the heater intake - that would be out the tailpipe and I haven't noticed any smoking exhaust......started smelling within a couple of hundred miles, otherwise runs fine.

I purposely came to this forum looking for an answer to this same exact burning oil smell. I have a 2011 Durango "Heat" V6 AWD and have started noticing this smell within the past month. EXACTLY AS YOU DESCRIBE. No oil leaks that I can find anywhere. We have 13,500 miles on ours. This is really strange.

I don't know if this will help with anything or not but I noticed that the smell stopped shortly after I installed my cold air intake.

Have you guys taken your Durangos to the dealership about this issue and if so what did they say?

As you look back on this thread you will see that I have had this burning oil smell issue since this vehicle was brand new. My Durango now has 42K and this week the check engine light came on and started running rough and was burning fuel rich. When I brought it to the dealer I reminded them that this issue happened once before under warranty (O2 sensor). Later in the day I get a call from the dealer and they tell me I was correct. It was the same O2 sensor that they replaced previously. He also said that it is odd for O2 sensors to go bad this frequently and upon further investigation they found oil seeping onto the O2 sensor from the PCV valve area and right valve cover. The following text is what was stated on my invoice. Replaced the O2 sensor, PCV valve and right valve cover. In order to replace the revised PCV hose and revised PCV valve, had to remove the wiper cowl assembly to gain access to the PCV hose clamp at the back of the intake. Reassembled and removed fault codes and reset PCM memory.
And the best part is they covered everything under the drive train warranty so no out of pocket $$ from me. It has been 3 days now and the burning oil smell has gone away. Hope this helps others with the same issue.
